Direction I'm thinking for displaying just the art.  If artwork is tagged with certain keywords, we could display the art.  I'd show the art work with the Title, any description and the Artist's name.  Clicking on the image would bring up the larger version, the clicking on the image again would take the user to the artist's profile page.
